I am currently watching Bleak House (BBC production from 2005). Well, mainly because of Gillian Anderson. Man, her voice is so different (and I am not talking about the accent...) Anyways, I am having Doctor Who moments. Seriously. A minute into the first episode, I am going "oh, look, Sally Sparrow!" LOL She's playing Ada Claire in case you are familiar with Bleak House. And the girl playing Esther (Ada's companion) was in The Long Game. And not 5 minutes later... "waaaah, Burn Gorman, give him a haircut! " LOLOL (he's Guppy btw). Then there's the guy who played Lucifer in The Fires of Pompeii who also has a rather large role as well as the lady who played Queen Victoria in Tooth and Claw. Then we also have that lady who played the alien grandma in Smith and Jones. And would you not believe it, even Catherine Tate has a short role (very short, she only had like a couple lines....). I can tell you, 3/4 of the faces are so damn familiar it's kinda like a family reunion LOL

It's the same way in Oz. There just seem to be small numbers of professional, consistently employed actors in those countries. But that really is funny.

Of course, I was watching The Golden Compass on the airplane and went 'that's Dr. Yana'. LOL Interesting where Who actors show up, isn't it?

I noticed that, too, in the Golden Compass (they also showed it on the plane from Frankfurt to Denver LOL) I never saw the ending though.... I am stuck when they found the boy in the ice desert.

I think it's interesting in the fact that you have these big money productions and people who play major roles in these productions end up being guest stars on Who! I was really wow'ed by Alex Kingston coming in for two eps!

Erich and I often joke about the actor relationship network at the BBC. It puts the Kevin Bacon game to absolute shame - no one's more than two actors removed from one another. :)

I've been watching Bleak House recently as well - it's sooo good. And it's so amusing to see how many people from the Who universe are in it - just in the first episode!

Gillian does have an interesting voice range, though, and no, it's not just accents. But for period pieces, she's able to drop it into a controlled alto that is just so incredibly different than Scully.

I actually started calling it "Two Degrees of David Tennant" for the British people. Fits much much MUCH better ;D

I am up to episode 9 now and I find it rather boring to be honest. I think it could have done with some serious cutting, plus the 30 minutes episodes are kinda meh. An hour would have been a lot better. I really feel like nothing ever really happens in 30 minutes.

And Gillian's voice is awesome! I've watched a heckload of X-Files the last few weeks (namely seasons 6 to 9) and it definitely is so different. I am kinda missing the lighthearted chuckle a bit, but that wouldn't go very well with the character.... I love versatile actors and actresses very much though!

If I recall, the book (comprised of its original serials) gets fairly ploddy at times. It's one of the reasons some of the Victorian novels are difficult to read at times, IMHO.

If you haven't seen it, I do recommend House of Mirth. It's another Andrew Davies production, starring Gillian, and gorgeously done.

(and was done during X-Files... so she's distinctly red-haired in it. *grin*)

Most of Dickens's books are like that. I remember the first time I read Great Expectations I needed a spreadsheet to actually keep track of who was related to whom and what was going on where LOL I really only have that problem with Dickens though...

And I actually have House of Mirth on DVD :) I bought it like the week it came on DVD all those years ago. I love it! The settings and costumes are truly gorgeous!

Hehehe I remember watching Bleak House when it first made it here on Masterpiece Theater and it was quite amusing to see just how many actors I recognized, primarily from Who, but also other projects. ^_^"
