Okay, so this is the rundown for What I've Done and pretty much everything that comes to mind while I am watching this thing over and over. If you have anymore specific questions, don't hesitate to ask :)
I know I didn't get much into the how I created what effect with what different effects or transitions. If I had done that, you'd be reading on for another couple hours, I would have had to type for another hour and I probably would have hit LJ's post limit LOL Like I said above, if you have any more questions about specific effects, just ask :)
What I've Done was I think the 3rd or 4th song that
rhoboat sent me to vid for her since she bought me at the Sweet Charity auction. The song kinda intrigued me, but I am really not the person to do fast paced beat songs. But I figured since she paid for me, I was gonna give it a try. That, and because I thought the song was cool and fit Dark!Doctor in season 3. So my premise was to only use season 3 clips to emphasize how certain events in season 2 had affected the Doctor. Every time I listened to the vid, I also pictured the Chameleon arch from HN for the "erase myself" clips because basically, it was what he did (though for different reasons) so I knew from the start those clips would go in right there.
The first thing I did though was rip the audio from Family of Blood. Banes's speech always gives me the chills, and I figured that would be a perfect description of the Doctor to start off the vid. It took me quite a while to remove the background music from the audio. Since there was still quite a hum in the background, I added some more audio effects to the beginning so the background music would not clash with the song so much. I added rain and thunder which I think also emphasized the darkness of the character a lot more.
Originally, I had the FoB clips go with Banes's speech, but then I thought why not show exactly what he talks about. I picked a few clips which I showed a darker and not so cheery side of the Doctor, mixed them with the words and timed them to the music. I did a lot of rearranging while I made the vid because I moved some clips later in the vid and replaced the empty spots in the beginning with new ones. I also thought making the clips black and white would give it a 20s style horror movie feeling in a way.
I also figured the vid called for a rather gothic font. Since I didn't have one that I thought fit,
rhoboat sent me a few different ones and in the end I picked the one that ended up in the vid. It definitely added a kinda gothic start to the vid. She had no idea btw that I was working on the vid. I just showed her the finished vid one day to surprise her :)
humansrsuperior was my beta and my idea pool.
Since I didn't want to get rid of the FoB clips completely because it really showed the darkest of the darkest side of the Doctor, I figured I could use the clips for the rest of the instrumental part at the beginning. I first just timed the clips to the change in music without caring much about the beats, but I quickly felt something was missing, so I tried flashes. They first were full opacity flashes without the background clip showing, but that was too prominent so I made a new track and set most clips to screen. Where that didn't work, I just lowered the opacity. To really create a contrast, I also fiddled with the brightness and contrast and in the end also made the clips completely black and white. That created a real flash effect with a specific clip.
I then moved on to the first set of lyrics. I knew the goodbye would be Ten and Martha and not Ten and Rose - for the simple the simple reason that Doomsday has really been done way too often and Martha's departure affected him as well. I mixed clips with the lyrics, paid some attention to the music and tone shift, and when I was done with it - again, something was missing. Since I paid special attention to the prominent beats before that, it now looked kinda lame not paying attention to the beats anymore. So I tried the flashes again. To spice up the whole thing a bit and to differ it from the beginning, I put in those quick clip cuts in the middle. I saw HRS use them in a few of her vids and thought there were quite cool, so I tried my hand at it. I don't quite remember why I made those quick cuts black and white... spur of the moment thing.
The next section was empty for quite a bit because I actually jumped right to the section with the "let mercy come" line. That was another thing I saw from the beginning, Doctor in DiM and EotD with his arms extended to his side and begging the Daleks to have mercy with him and kill him. That section was also already edited without paying attention to the beats per se with flashes, so I re-edited it to add flashes and also added the quick clips in the middle.
I then salvaged everything usable from the chameleon arch section in HM and FoB and put them into the timeline, cut them to fit the beat and added a greenish tint to them after making them 50% black and white. I wanted them to differ from the rest, and that coloring kinda looked good. Don't remember why I picked the clips from TLE to go along with it - maybe just because there were a bunch of very dark and PO'ed looking Doctor clips. Oh, no, I remember, I made a list of all the bad things he had done (as in killed or injured people and creatures) and the scene of him closing Lazarus's eyes came to mind first. Oh, for all those sections, while the "erase" lines are always greenish in tint, the other clips showing the bad things he has done that need erasing simply have a 50% black and white effect added to them.
Since I got a bit tired of the flashes and figured if I use them for all the beats in the vid, it was gonna be overkill, I thought of some other way to emphasize the clips. I first just used the beats as a cut section for the next clip, but that wasn't enough emphasize on the beats for me so I added very short flash transitions to the clips cuts at the beats. That then ended up being too much, so I changed the short, 3 frame transition to an additive disolve with creates a smoother flash effect.
Next I went back to fill in the clips for the empty spot earlier in the lyrics. Regret and truth kinda spoke Ten and Master to me, cause though he hated what the Master stood for him, he didn't want him to die. Regret for not being able to stop him from dying and truth for admitting that the death and their past together affected him deeply. That and because I absolutely love the Gallifrey clips and the kid just always mesmerized me. This time I made the flashes blueish instead of black and white to fit the tint of the original Gallifrey clips of the boy and the time vortex.
Then I skipped over the section which now holds the TSC clips because I had no idea what to use. Those were the last clips I put in there. The only reason those specific clips are in there is because I had run out of other clips to use and was completely drawing a blank and I really wanted that "if looks could kill" look in there somewhere so Lillith had to go in with those clips. Pathetic reason, I know LOL
Don't remember why I thought Ten carrying Martha would fit to those lines, but I really like those clips and since there is a shortage of clips anyways, in they went.
And again, mercy means Ten asking the Daleks to have mercy with him and kill him, in the clips went!
I originally had planne to use the chameleon arch clips for all the choruses but there really were not a lot of clips I could use (which is why Martha also ended up in the first chorus), so I had to come up with somthing else. There wasn't really anything that matches the chameleon arch so I had to really take a wild ride with the interpretation of that line. It took me a while and a lot of consulting with HRS
to finally come up with the 42 clips of Ten in the freezer. I actually worked on the instrumental part towards the end first because I was totally drawing a blank on this. Since I had used a lot of clips of Ten doing "bad stuff" towards the end already, I ended up using the Ten blowing up the Lazarus creature clips though I really am not quite satisfied with them. But there wasn't much else to use.
The instrumental part next was just me choosing some clips which I liked and also showed another, not so dark side of the Doctor. Started off with him pointing a gun at someone, but then he can't do it. And when he has to burry a friend, you can see the sorrow on is face. And did I mention I like the clips? :D
Cheesy clip ahoy! LOL I am not much a fan of the levitating Doctor. I thought it was totally cheesy. However, the line "today this ends" just called for Ten stopping the Master, and then the forgiving line showing Ten forgiving him. I then had to work backwards a bit from the scene where Ten snatched away Saxon's screwdriver. That's how the levitating clips ended up in there. And because the Master shooting Ten kinda fit the "pain" line. Did I mention that I think that scene is kinda cheesy? To make it less cheesy, I played a bit with the colors when Ten gets hit. I added a bunch of effects to that moment and faded in and out. There was a black and white filter, an orange gradient map and brightness and opacity filters involved.
Towards the end of this section I ran out of clips to match to the beats so I decided instead of using flashes in this section, I was gonna cut out of the clips during the beats. To create continueing movement in the clips below, I just made black media clips, 2 frames long, and put them in a new track above the clips and matched them to the beats. Since the beats turn louder and louder, I also turned the opacity on the clips until I had 100% opacity for the last few beats.
For the ending of the vid and yet another chorus, I just paired up clips of bad things he has done with clips where I think he tries to erase himself. Since the screaming 42 clips worked kinda well for the second chorus, I thought I could use more clips of Ten screaming in pain like that. That's why I stuck in the clips from EotD of him hanging on the antenna pole.
Since I was lacking clips, I decided to violate my own rule and I did resort to season 2 for a very short section of clips. The only reason why I could justify those DD clips to me though was that it had Freema in them LOL
The end was basically a "d'oh, how could I forget the TRB clips of Ten in the spray of water" clips? So in they went, and I also added the rain sound effect I had at the beginning with the thunder so the water would be emphasized more. I faded the section to 100% black and white just cause I thought it would be a cool effect, zoomed in on Ten's eyes and was done.
Or so I thought. Something was missing and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I thought since I opened it with sound clips, maybe I should end it with sound clips as well. I remember I had some different ones in there before, but I don't quite remember anymore which ones they were. They didn't fit though. So when I watched a pre-render of the vid, the DD clips suddenly hit me where Ten says "I'm so sorry" before he killed Adeola. I actually pulled the sound from New Earth instead (where Ten opens one of the coffins and sees the infected humans inside half alive). Stuck that in, had my ending.
Finis - after a few weeks of on and off work on this.

First of all, thank you so much for such a detailed yet apparently still brief commentary on this wonderful video. Honestly, I enjoyed getting to know your process a little like that. thanks for being so honest. And even though you didn't go into the effects a whole deal in this meta, you still mentioned some things that I'm gonna have to try out myself. :P And I already bothered you about the effects when you first posted this vid.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really admire your thinking behind using audio. It worked wonders in this video.
Also this --> Since I was lacking clips, I decided to violate my own rule and I did resort to season 2 for a very short section of clips. The only reason why I could justify those DD clips to me though was that it had Freema in them LOL made me LOL the way you phrased it here. Because I've actually never seen Adeola utilized to such an effect in a video. No one ever connects her to Martha and to S3 or anything, so I loved seeing it in the vid.
So yeah, once again, thanks. I wish you didn't single me out like that in the title of the post, because maybe more people would have read this! :P
Enjoy the booze in Vegas. Don't lose too much $. And don't touch the strippers!
